Here are some interesting links that have to do with the statue we saw. There are a lot of theories going around as to whose face is on the statue. Someone also thinks that the statue is using crutches. But look carefully...
It looks to me like those are Ankhs... the necklace that Horace fought with his wife over. And here's a link to the Egyptian God Horus. Look what's in his hand. Also, take a look at the heiroglyph right under his picture. Isn't that bird one of the symbols that we saw on the countdown clock when Locke stopped pushing the button?
Good episode, but I hope that last scene doesn't lead to too much Kate/Jack/Sawyer love triangle crap.
Anywho... yeah, the statue is totally holding ankhs. Great call. So did Horace make up his identity to fit the story of Horus, or is the god Horus based off of a middle-aged Dharma schlep?
As for the statue's face... let's say it doesn't have the bird-face that wiki depicts for Horus. If it had the face of a Lostie, I'm torn between if it would be Jack (Jacob) or Locke.
I'm thinking the statue has to have a face we will recognize. Why else would they only show the back? Could it be Richard Alpert's face? He could have been around since ancient times. Or you could be right about a Lostie. It's very possible they'll start time travelling again, and maybe they'll pull an Evil Dead 2 and have the hero thrust into the distant past at the end of the show.
However, if it were Locke's face or Jack's face on the statue, wouldn't Richard have recognized this fact? When he first meets Locke in the 40's, he's obviously never seen him before. And I don't recall and sense of recognition when he first met Jack. I guess he could have been hiding it, but if I met a guy who looked exactly like my 100 ft. God-like statue, I'd probably do a spit-take.
I loved this episode. For me it was the first good episode of the season. It proves that Lost can be great without shocking revelations and rely on good story writing and good character development.
So I love the Horus/Horace connection, but I think this picture might have more connection to the statue.

"As a protector, she often was shown with one arm resting on the sa symbol, which symbolized protection, and on occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life, or a knife, which would be used to threaten evil spirits."
Monsteratomic, you nailed it! That's the statue. Awesome. Funny how the other ones were close, though. Some other site had the statue as the Egyptian God of the underworld. This makes WAY more sense. It's a dead ringer.
I too have recently noticed an Egypt connection/theme lately here in LOST. Some of this may have already been mentioned....
A few things: 1. In this last episode we see the full statue (which we assume to be the 4-toed statue in full), which seems to be holding an Ankh in at least one of it's hands (which represents eternal life)....which is the same symbol that is on Paul's necklace....which is interesting considering the fact that people who have died have a way of coming back to life on the island or appearing to others on the island. 2. The Dharma leader at the time in 1974 is Horace....sounds like "Horus" the Egyptian god. 3. Richard Alpert, who is the Others leader in 1974 has the initials R.A......similar to "Ra," another Egyptian god. 4. Richard Alpert has the look of eyeliner (outlined eyes) [although i know that's just how that actor's eyes are- it's not really eyeliner].....very Egyptian-like visually though. 5. Hurley is painting the Sphynx when Locke/Benthem comes to visit him in the mental institution. 6. The exit from the island is in Tunisia, which is fairly close to Egypt. 7. There are a lot of hieroglyphs that we've seen around....some on the "temple" area and also we see them on the countdown timer in the Swan station after it's gone past 108 minutes which I've read that at Comic Con 2006, producer Damon Lindelof translated the countdown timer sequence to mean "underworld." We also see hieroglyphs on Ben's secret door, the frozen wheel chamber and on the Ajira Airways boarding pass.
Did ancient Egypt have an influence on the island? Or did the ancient culture of the island have an influence on Egypt? Or perhaps at some point in time and space the island was closer to Egypt (if that's possible?)?
It will be interesting to see how this all ties in!

I love that these guys are part of Dharma. I wonder when little Ben and his Dad will show up.

Looks a lot like the statue. Is Horace/Horus a coincidence?

Oh, and I also remember that bird glyph as one of the symbols from the hatch just before it blew up. Good stuff!

I think Sawyer is finally realizing his desire to be 'respectable'.

I forgot all about Hurley painting the Sphinx. Nice!
