Lost: The Man From Tallahassee (airdate: 3/21/07)
When Kate and Locke arrive at the Others' camp, Ben promises to tell Locke the island's secrets as long as he stops his destructive plan, and Kate's reunion with Jack doesn't go very well when she learns that the Others have offered him a deal. More of Locke's troubled past is revealed.

That was some ending! Is that the smoke monster sitting in that chair?
What the hell is Locke doing blowing up the sub? I can understand not wanting to leave the island, but why keep everyone else there? Unless he "feels" the island needs these people to stay. I hope there's a satisfactory explanation for Locke's behavior.
It was cool seeing the recruiter on the island. So was he recruiting for "the others" or Dharma? I guess "the others". So confusing.
And we finally got to see how Locke broke his back. Yikes!
I just don't get Locke. He doesn't have to leave the island if he doesn't want to. Rescuers come, you say "No thanks, I'll stay." WTF. Didn't notice the recruiter.
Which scene was that? And Jack was being a total moron. I can see you have a deal to be let off the island but then all of a sudden he's buddy buddy with Tom? Where's all the boiling anger? These writers better shape up.
Question: How do you know "the Others" aren't
Dharma? Because of what Patchy said? Can any
of the island "natives" be believed? And if Ben
was born on the island was he there because of
Dharma or were the others there first? And if the
Others aren't Dharma why all the continued Dharma food drops? I'm pretty sure that chicken in Ben's
fridge had a Dharma tattoo along the small of its
back.
The island does not want anyone getting off of it... That we know because like Ben said "you are in communion with the island".
I think that Locke did the right thing. No one would be able to come back anyways without the navigational beacon.
Kevin's right... i don't know the Others aren't Dharma... I'm just assuming that Patchy was telling the truth there. If I was on the island, i wouldn't believe Patchy, but as a viewer, I'd HOPE that the writers wouldn't feed us false info just to confuse us even more.
I disagree with Lohan though. Like Ben said... the sub can't make it back to the island anyway, so why blow it up? Of course, it's possible that Locke didn't believe that, but patchy said the same thing. I guess Locke felt he couldn't take the chance... but like Kevin said... why not just stay on the island with The Others?
By the way, I loved the dialog in this one. When Locke asked Ben where the power came from and he said they have 2 giant hamsters running in wheels in their secret underground lair... priceless. There was more snappy dialog too, but i forget it.
And what was the significance of "Bring me the man from Tallahassee?". Was that referring to Locke's Dad? So Locke's Dad "appeared" even before Locke was near the village? Interesting.
Oh, and the recruiter was the guy with Ben at the end who opened the door to reveal Locke's dad.
Who thinks Jack's Dad is going to show up next? I think Locke's Dad (aka the real Sawyer) was recruited on the island and yes he's the man from tallahasee. I don't think there is a real magic box type thing. I just think Ben manipulates the others with the belief of the Magic Box.
The show was exciting and riveting and yet somehow by the end, I couldn't have cared less. All its proving to me is that they didn't know where they were going from the get go. The show has completely dropped the black and white element, the sickness, and are only solving backstory issues which I find boring.
I'm still into it. I think they know where they're going... they just don't know all the details about getting there, if that makes any sense. Also, they're obviously stretching stuff out.
Locke played chess last week. Black and white!
You know, Laurette and I thought the same thing about the guy in the chair.
I don't get Locke either, he knew that Ben wanted him to blow up the sub, yet he did it anyway. Also, why did Locke bring the C4? He didn't know about the submarine until after he blew up the building. He just guessed that there was going to be something to blow up at their camp?
I think Locke would have to be retarded for blowing up the submarine. I think it was just the writers doing a horrible job of coming up with a way to keep Jack on the island.
I am curious as to how Locke's dad showed up. I am also curious as to why the Other's know so much about everyone. Where did they get all their information about these people (the survivors) and why did they investigate them. That's what I want to know.
I am confused with where this season is going.
Silas may be onto something with his remark about Locke's dad being recruited. I just caught the ending again when my wife was watching it, and i noticed that right before Locke's Dad pushed him out the window, he poured himself a drink. It was the same super-expensive alcohol (brandy?) that Desmond's girlfriend's father drinks, and the same as the bottle Desmond found on the island. Could be a little easter egg they threw in, or maybe it signifies something.
Right before Locke opened the storage room door, my wife yelled out "There's no way his father can be in here!". I think she's getting soured as well. Too many coincidences. She'll believe in a smoke monster before she'll buy into all this coincidence... or even destiny.
I just noticed something else while watching the end of the episode again. Locke is soaking wet when he returns from the sub. How cool would it be if Locke moved the sub, swam back, and just blew up the end of the dock. Of course, we'd need an explanation of how Locke could navigate a sub... but he did know exactly where that light switch was. And when he entered, why not just plant the explosives right at the entrance? He looked as if he had a destination. Maybe Locke WAS a submarine pilot. If you remember, his eyes lit up when Patchy mentioned a sub.
In fact, if this were true, it could revive my love for the Locke character.
By the way, i did some more digging, and I don't think Locke's Dad is the smoke monster, or was brought to the island at some point to manipulate Locke, or was recruited. I think he was on the plane. If Locke's Dad is the original "Sawyer" that conned Sawyer's Dad, then he would have been in Australia... since the whole reason Sawyer was in Australia was to find this guy.
I'm on a roll here! Check this out. Locke's Dad's name is Anthony Cooper. The name he was using to scam the rich broad was Adam Seward. "Anthony Cooper, Adam Seward" is an anagram for "Sawyer, the con man, a poor dad."
You guys THINK waaaaaay to much. Loved the episode. I hope the rest of the season moves at this pace. Close your ears Chris, but from what I've been reading it's going to be really, really slow with everything happening in the end. bleeeeeeeh.
Magic box? Yeah why not. Don't forget this is an Island with a magnetic explosion, a smoke monster, manifestations (Jack's father, Katies horse etc). So, whether it's magic or "science" it doesn't matter to me. I'm just along for the ride.
I think Locke's actions were very true to character. Think of his actions in the beginning of the series with the hatch. He's always doing his own thing. Maybe it's what the island wanted. Maybe he's bigger then everything there... who knows.
So, strap on your seat belt and hopefully it won't be too long before we see some action again.
I love the anagram with Locke's dad, but the problem with the character reveals are that everyone has already figured these out, like Claire being Jack's half sister and Locke's dad being the real Sawyer.
I don't hear a slow down at all, quite the opposite. They've been character mystery revealing for the last couple of episodes and will seem to be doing the same in the future. I think the end of the season moves us away from the others and dharma into new mysteries is what I hear (which I'm not a big fan of - hello enough mysteries already).
I think its becoming more and more obvious that we're missing a backstory from Locke that shows that he knew the most about the island before they crashed. I think by the end of the series we will find that Locke always was a couple of steps ahead of everyone because he was in on it all along and that it will go a long way to explaining all his mysterious knowledge of EVERYTHING. Actually, ultimately I think he's a Dharma operative sent to investigate the state of the island, hence blow up anything that could reveal stuff about Dharma.
I do think with this being the first where someone from the flashback shows up on the island, I'm pretty sure we'll see someone from everyone's past on the island at some point ala Jack's dad actually being alive because of the island, Sun's dad being in control, Michael's wife being on the island, Nadia being on the island (why else can't sayid find her). I take that back, I guess the american officer from kate and sayid's flashback did end up being the other hatchmate was actually the first.
I don't know about Locke being a Dharma operative. Their way of getting him there was pretty crazy (cause a plane crash?). And why send wheelchair guy to the island? He could hardly be expected to get around. I think everything with Locke is based in mysticism... and if you can deal with that, you can deal with his actions. I'm not a man of faith, so everything he does lately pisses me off.
I like the idea of Locke being a Dharma operative. I think it is highly unlikely though. If the Others crashed the plane, maybe, but the only reason that plane crashed is because Desmond didn't want to push the button that one time. There is no way the Others could have expected Desmond to decide not to press the button at the moment.
I really would like to know what Locke is up to though. It would be pretty cool if he did move the sub and tricked everyone into thinking he blew it up.
