Some interesting stuff going on here...

I had a theory that Widmore wanted to get back to the island so he wouldn't age anymore. But it looks like he aged while he was on the island... or did he age because he took frequent trips off the island?

The entire episode, I got the feeling that John Locke was the smoke monster. That's why it couldn't appear to Ben... it was already there.

So Penny's not dead. Good news. But I really wanted Desmond to have followed Ben and ended up on the plane somehow. Guess that didn't happen, or we'd have seen him on the island by now.

And what the hell was that cryptic question about "what lies in the shadow of the statue?"??? My first thought was that the bounty hunter and her "men" were dragged away by Smokey and "changed", but Smokey and the temple are on the other island. Hmm.

I was talking to Rohmr, and she seemed to think that "what lies in the shadow of the statue" was a code of some sort... like she was waiting for a countersign from Lapidus. She seems to think that maybe the bounty hunter and the other men are working for Widmore. It didn't make any sense to me at first, but then we started talking about how it could be possible. This is what we came up with...

The bounty hunter claimed to have been working for the family of one of the men killed by Sayid, but maybe she was working for Widmore. Sayid was running around killing Widmore's men, so it makes sense.

Ben calls Widmore on the docks and tells him that he's going back to the island. It's possible that Widmore already had a tail on Ben all along. If so, he probably already knows that he's booked on the Ajira flight and arranges for his men to be onboard.

Here's where it gets a little iffy. At some point Widmore calls the bounty hunter and tells her to be on the plane too. Maybe he needs a leader... someone he can trust. In order for this theory to work, Widmore's men would have to be unfamiliar with each other... requiring the sign/countersign "what lies in the shadow of the statue?". The bounty hunter informs Widmore that she has Sayid, but Sayid isn't important anymore. He tells her to let him go. She refuses, so he tells her to bring him along.

The bounty hunter and the men have this giant crate. It must be theirs, and it must have been onboard the plane. They also have guns. If the guns were from Ben's office (or anywhere else on the island) Ben would have found them first. They must have been on the plane as well. How do you get guns onboard a plane in this day and age? Widmore can probably pull those kind of strings.

What's the significance of Des and Penny's boat being named "Our Mutual Friend"? I know I've heard that phrase before in Lost, but I can't remember.

I like the idea that Locke is the smoke monster. It makes sense to me. Since he's also Christian who also came in a crate.

The container does seem to be of some importance so that lends itself to some Widmore conspiracy. Since Lapidus was part of Widmore's original crew, it stands that bounty might have known about him and didn't kill him on the spot because of it.

I was surprised Caesar died so quickly.

I don't buy any of the Danielle just letting Ben take her baby in that way. I think it would fit her story better if the others just avoided her constantly and stole her baby in secret, hence her not knowing anyone was on the island for 16 years (which also seems crazy considering the island just seems to be teeming with people). Also if Widmore wanted Danielle dead, I think she would be dead after 16 years.

Oh forgot to mention, obviously sawyer and gang are shot at by bounty hunter and thugs with guns when they steal the canoes.

I thought the same thing about Sawyer and gang getting shot at by the bounty hunter.

I also figure that Sawyer and the gang must leave Dharma fairly soon. I figure Ben has to return to camp at some point, and since he has no memory of them as Dharma people, they have to be gone when he gets back. Of course, it's possible he doesn't return until he's an adult, but it's unlikely.

I was also hoping for Desmond to return to the island out for revenge. Now there's really no reason for his character to come back at all.

I don't hate the sign/countersign theory, but I think "dragged away by Smokey and changed" is actually more plausible. For all we know, ALL the others/hostiles were at some point dragged away by Smokey...

So why did Ben pause when he saw Des & Penny's kid, Charlie? Did he know it might grow up to be Charlie (from Driveshaft) or Charles (Whidmore)? Or does he just have a soft spot for kids because of his own f'd up childhood?

Anyone have links to screen captures of those hieroglyphs from the temple?
